At right, Team Carbo gets the Onager ready for another round of hurling Punkins at the 1998 Punkin Chunkin Championships in Deleware

[twisting the torsion spring]

AARRGGHH!!!!!!

Here we are ( true Manly Men! ) at Punkin Chunkin 1997 twisting up the rope torsion spring by cranking the skiene pipe with the "pursuader" bar. In the 1998 version, the pursuader bar is connected to the skeine pipe by a steel pin through 2 steel washers welded to the pipe(instead of by the chain seen in this photo).

[the team grunts]

Using a better system at Punkin Chunkin 1999 allows Team Carbo grunts to really torque it up!

[attaching the cable]

1999 Cable boy of the year, Gary, hands the winch cable to Captain Bob so it can be attached to the arm.

[Andy cranks the Onager]

Once attached, the arm is cocked back by turning the winch via pedal power - supplied by Paul.

[attaching the sling]

The final step is to carefully attach the sling and place a pumpkin (or other suitable projectile) into the sling pouch.

Onager throws 1,119 feet!

The release rod is pulled - triggering the release hook - and away it goes!
