Scenes from 1999 World Championship Punkin Chunkin
This year's competition was again held at a soy bean field near Millsboro Delaware. The weather was beautiful (for a change) but the pumpkins were soft - many a machine made "pumpkin pie "instead of getting some distance.
Onager sits poised to compete at the World Championships.
Competition at the World Championships can be very demanding so all team members must be in top shape. Paul Carbo gets himself mentally and physically prepared for some tough competition.
Scott Fichter - the official video and camera man for Team Carbo - and one heck of a guy! His brother Gary, who also joined Team Carbo this year, proved to be quite a hurler himself!
Arch nemesis of the Onager - Hypertension - a high tech super treb, powered by some awesome springs.
Here is a close up of Hypertension's power source - no, the springs I mean!
John Huber - Team Captain of Hypertension - and a formidable trash talker!
Gene's Machine - World Champions in the Human Powered Division for the past 5 years and in the Unlimited Catapult Division 3 years in a row. Their world record throw went 1647 feet!
PumpkinSlayer - They also come from the Raleigh-Durham area. This was their first World Championship Punkin Chunkin appearance - and they did real well -3rd place in the Human Powered Division
This is Loaded Boing - The world's most dangerous slingshot! They've re-tooled quite a bit from last year so they are more mobile.
This is a machine called FIBONACCI 540. Their name is the acronym for "FLUID INDUCED BIO OPTIMIZED NITROGENASSISTED CENTRIFUGAL CHUNK INTENSIFIER" - they belong in a class by themselves - are they human powered or unlimited? are they centrifugal or catapult? Whatever they are, they were fun to watch - they ended up taking third place in the Unlimited Centrifugal class - not bad for their first time at Punkin Chunkin.
Here are some trebuchets - counterweight style catapults. I'm still not sure what that wheel is in the middle of them, or just how it worked.
The centrifugals - Determinator and Bad to the Bone - they are fun to watch as they crank it up!
Here is the front line of the Unlimited Division - there's a lot of air cannons out there! The winner of the Unlimited Air Cannon division, and the overall winner was Big Ten Inch who shot a pumpkin over 3600 feet.
